I muttered this question to myself as I clicked through reviews of nearby restaurants and markets in my little neighborhood of Fox Point, Providence. There are a lot of places boasting authentic Portuguese cuisine, along with bread and pastry or a wide variety of madeira. While I miss so much about living in Washington, D.C., Providence has surpassed my expectations related to food offerings. One of the greatest surprises has been getting to know Portuguese cuisine, and seeing how embedded this culture is within the area. Immigrants from Portugal heavily settled Fox Point at the beginning of the 20th century, drawn here for manufacturing and waterfront employment opportunities. I recently learned that thirty-two percent of residents claim Portuguese ancestry in our neighborhood.

Blue Apron, the meal delivery service start-up that has taken over my demographic’s kitchens, does this nifty thing where they give subscribers a coupon to pass on to a friend, good for one week’s worth of food. A free week’s worth of food? Heck yeah!
New Belgium Trippel Belgian-Style Ale
Are you a Belgian homeless man, seeking a fusion of your country’s classic trippel-style beer with malt liquor? Good news, Didier! You can find it right here in America, in Colorado to be precise. But I must forewarn you that this fusion, manifest in New Belgium’s Trippel Belgian Style Ale, is not what one would call “quaffable”. That’s not to say it’s not good, but I’d be impressed if you reached for a second bottle in one session. Read more “New Belgium Trippel Belgian-Style Ale”
Kohlrabi
Ask anyone, “What’s kohlrabi?” and you’ll be treated to the blank-est of stares. They may have seen it in the produce aisle or in a summer CSA share, but not known the name of this tricky, alien-looking plant. And even if you do know of kohlrabi, do you know how to prepare it? Probably not, but that is about to change. Read more “Kohlrabi”
Game of Thrones Feast
Game of Thrones (GoT) is a TV show you may have heard of. It’s got dragons, looks a little medieval, and is (loosely? Can I say that?) based on the fantastic A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin. It airs in the springtime on HBO, featuring some great acting and fantastic effects. For the last six years, I have hosted or co-hosted a big, themed dinner for the season premier, replete with mulled wine and lots of red meat. The sixth season aired in late April, and I want to tell you about this great party you weren’t invited to. Read more “Game of Thrones Feast”
Flying Dog’s Mint Julep Ale
Do you need a recommendation for a delicious beer to drink while wearing fancy hats and watching horse races? I would not be able to provide you that recommendation, Chauncey, because the only one that would fit the bill, Flying Dog’s Mint Julep Ale, pretty much sucks.

Hey, Guess What? It’s June.
Happy June! My favorite month of the year. At the start of each month, I take out my little black book and carefully write down names; targets. I have thirty days in which to hunt them down and subject them to my will. I slash them with sharp knives, brutally pound them with blunt objects, and sometimes render them to shreds with my own hands. And I relish every minute of it.
